Voices of Change: Youth in Kenya: Speaking Out on the Financial Crisis and Political Divide

Voices of Change

In Kenya Today, young people are confronting a harsh economic reality compounded by rising costs of living, a strained education system, and deepening political divisions. In a recent podcast hosted by Isaac Kirigwi, youth from the Dagoretti area shared their experiences and frustrations, painting a vivid picture of the nation's challenges and their determination to push for change.

The Economic Burden

The rising cost of living is one of the most pressing concerns. Over the past year, food prices have soared, making basic necessities like rice, sugar, and cooking oil unaffordable for many. Despite this, the government has introduced more taxes, which disproportionately affect the poor and middle class. One youth expressed the desperation of many families:

"My family used to afford three meals a day, but now, we have cut back to two. How can the government ask us to pay more taxes when they have done nothing to reduce food prices?"

This financial strain has stifled the dreams of many young Kenyans who had hoped to achieve financial independence. Instead, they find themselves burdened by economic hardship, with little relief in sight.

The Education Crisis

Education, once seen as the pathway to prosperity, has become another source of frustration. Skyrocketing tuition fees and other expenses have made it increasingly difficult for families to afford schooling. Even after making significant sacrifices, graduates are entering a job market that offers few opportunities. A frustrated graduate voiced their disappointment:

"I worked so hard to get my degree, but now, I can’t even find a job. The government keeps telling us that education is the solution, but what’s the point when we graduate into unemployment?"

This sentiment reflects the disillusionment of thousands of young Kenyans who feel that the promise of education leading to success is now a hollow narrative.

Political Division and Tribalism

Beyond economic and educational woes, political division remains a critical issue. Politicians are often seen prioritizing power over progress, using tribal allegiances to divide the nation. However, the youth are increasingly aware of these tactics and are determined to resist them. As one young Kenyan declared:

"We see politicians fighting for power, using tribalism to divide us. But we are not fooled. We need leaders who will unite us and focus on creating jobs and lowering the cost of living - not just playing political games."

This growing awareness is fueling a movement among the youth to reject tribal divisions and demand accountable leadership.

A Call for Unity and Action

The youth of Kenya are making their voices heard, calling for a government that leads with integrity and addresses their needs. They are demanding solutions to the economic and educational crises and an end to divisive politics. Their message is clear: unity and action are essential for real change.

I conclude with these words: the future of Kenya depends on its youth continuing to raise their voices, reject tribalism, and hold their leaders accountable. Their resilience and determination offer hope for a brighter, more unified future for Kenya.
