KENYA TODAY
"Hello and welcome to Kenya Today, the podcast where we dive into the most pressing issues shaping our nation. I’m your host, Isaac Kirigwi, and today we’re exploring a topic that seems all too familiar – Kenya’s political landscape, both past and present. From the Moi era in the 1990s to the rise of Gen Z activism in 2024, we’ll uncover the patterns of power, control, and how the youth are shaping a new direction."
A Look Back at the Moi Era
"In the 1990s, Kenya was under the strong grip of Daniel arap Moi’s
leadership. During this time, KBC Television and Radio were the only sources of
news, and figures like Mulu Mutisya famously declared that Kenya had 'One
Multiparty' – KANU. It was a political era where thinking differently was
almost criminal, and scandals like Goldenberg were swept under the rug as
distractions were created to shift public focus away from the real
issues."
The Rise of Gen Z Against the Financial Bill 2024
"Fast forward to today, and we’re seeing similar tactics. Just a few
months ago, Kenya’s youth, led by Gen Z, took to the streets to protest against
the punitive Financial Bill 2024. Media coverage showed a violent police
response, but the government was forced to act, eventually withdrawing the bill
and dismissing its cabinet. However, familiar faces reappeared, suggesting that
political cronies remain in control."
The Opposition’s Strategy and the ‘Inclusive Government’
"During the protests, the opposition remained quiet, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. When the government, fearing collapse, opened the door for negotiations and formed an 'inclusive government,' it seemed like the political class was more interested in uniting for their own benefit than addressing the people’s concerns. The ethnically divided older generation continues to fall into the 'Mtu Wetu' mindset, but the youth, especially Gen Z, are pushing back, proudly declaring themselves 'tribeless."
Government Secrecy and Unresolved Issues
"Despite the youth’s activism, key issues remain unaddressed. The rumored
sale of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to India’s Adani Group
raised alarms, though the government denied any such plans. The secrecy
surrounding the deal leaves many questions unanswered, like why Kenyan
engineers aren’t being trusted with such projects. Similar suspicions have
arisen around the new Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), replacing NHIF
without any clear justification."
A Call for Real Change
"As the government distracts itself with internal political battles, like the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Kenyans are demanding leadership that addresses real issues: affordable education, healthcare, and accountability. While the political elite play their games, the youth are ready for change – and they’re not falling for the same old distractions."
"Thank you for tuning in to Kenya Today. The parallels between the
1990s and today are hard to ignore, but there’s hope in the youth. Gen Z is
breaking free from the past and pushing for the real change in Kenya. Share your thoughts and stay engaged in the conversation. Until next time, I am Isaac Kirigwi."
